I love the commute come rain or shine….but in the winter you’ve got to think! How well do you know your route? Yeah I could tell you my route bend for bend…..I couldn’t tell you every wet, potenially icy manhole cover or the slightly depression in a road where black ice might lurk…you might see it on the winter morning commute but what about the dark ride home?

Basically winter time riding, slow it down a bit..wrap up warm, relax, enjoy but think!

A good idea is an old trick used by road racers many years ago,
cut a tennis ball in half, fit it on your bars, then with a piece of elastic thru the tennis ball you atie a piece of sponge to the other end. when your visor gets dirty you pull out the sponge, wipe your visor clean and if your elastic is the right length you just let it go and it spring back into the ball, stopping it flapping around. when you get to your destination or a garage you rinse off the sponge leaving it clean for the next ride. simple & cheap, but effective.

I find the worst part of riding in winter is the combination of really wet/dirty road, and super slippy service covers/road markings. Sends a jolt through you when you’re straddling a line, one wheel either side xD

One of the problems in winter is wet roads when they put the salt down as it makes the spray so filthy. The wiper strip on a gloved finger/thumb helps but can just smear dirt and when headlights hit it the light refracts and really cuts down visibility. You end up using the palm/back of your gloves to try and get the visor clean. You have to remember to wipe the dirt off your gloves every morning with a damp cloth to cut down the residue. If you have an electric screen remember to raise it a little to cut out the spray but try and allow any clean rain to hit the visor.

I commute by bike all year round from Ipswich to London for work. Winter is tough and I use Gerbing heated socks and gloves and a cold killers undersuit in addition to my normal gear. What special equipment do you think is worthwhile?

a chillout track on your mp3 player

I find riding longer distances in the cold/wet, the tension just builds continuously until your aware that your stiff as a board. Muscle relaxation excircises work a treat though, if you remember to do them :)
